Signs and Symptoms of Rising Damp

  • Tide marks. A horizontal stain line on internal walls, typically up to around one metre from the floor.
  • Salt deposits. White, crystalline staining on or just beneath the plaster surface, caused by ground salts carried up by the moisture.
  • Damaged plaster. Plaster that feels soft, crumbles, or shows blistering at the lower sections of the wall.
  • Peeling decorations. Paint or wallpaper lifting at the base of walls, often in a horizontal band.
  • Musty smell. A persistent damp smell at ground level, particularly in unventilated rooms.
  • Damaged skirting boards. Timber showing signs of rot or warping where it meets affected walls.

How Rising Damp Differs from Other Damp Types

How Is Rising Damp Treated?

The standard professional treatment for rising damp is chemical damp-proof course injection. A silicone-based DPC cream is injected into the mortar bed of the affected wall, forming a new horizontal moisture barrier.

The existing plaster is removed to expose the masonry. The injection is carried out at regular intervals along the mortar course, and once dry, a salt-resistant specialist replastering system is applied. This prevents the hygroscopic salts already in the wall from continuing to attract moisture and damage new decorations.
